Karen has taken photography classes at the International Center for Photography in New York City. She has also studied at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, Colorado, with David Hiser and George Wolfe. She has taken additional photography courses with David Hiser at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies. She completed a one-year course with Jim Miotke at betterphoto.com.
